54 Km from Alicante, Arcoy is an industrial town, the centre of the Spanish textile trade, on a scenic site at the meeting of three rivers (the Molina, the Barchell and the Serpis ) with mountains all around. Many of the factories get hydro-electric power from the Sal to de las Aguas falls. The town puts on a particularly impressive Festivals of the Moors and Christians to commemorate the attack in 1726 that finally gave the Christians victory.
The Plaza España, the centre of Alcoy is surrounded by classical buildings, including the Parish Church of Santa Maria and Ayuntamiento. You want to walk from there along the narrow streets of old buildings.
The population of 60.000 tens to be employed today more in the chemical industry (cosmetics) and food (stuffed olives, confectionery, liqueurs).
